Teaching Philosophy
As an educator and adult learner, I believe the learning experience should transcend traditional classroom environments and pedagogical approaches. By engaging students in reflective exploration within an interdisciplinary studies foundation of study, we can guide them towards healthy critical thought and conceptual ideation. Best practices in group discussions, discourse/exchange, critiques, research, data collection, comparative analysis, conceptualization, and focused critical review are essential in most scholarly learning environments––they are a standard in mine.
We have a unique responsibility to help inspire intellectual ideas, curiosity and spark the creative imagination of our student body. If we can make a connection with adult learners in a unique way, we can then broaden their creative horizons.
I am always available to my students. Having been an adult learner this philosophy is drawn from experience. I have maintained long-lasting relationships with my professors. Their significance to my success has been crucial.
With regard to my journey as an educator, I am continuously learning how to become a better facilitator of the aforementioned deliverables. I am also committed to my professional development. As a result, I try to engage in new teaching strategies, stay current with trending technologies, improve deliverables, and reevaluate student-learning outcomes. The use of course evaluation summaries for improvement is one example. Course feedback has been a crucial source of self-reflection and narrative contextualization. Informative data like this has provided evidence of my strengths, and where I also need additional refinement.
Like many engaged in the process of learning, I strive to broaden and diversify my knowledge base. Even still, I am very much a work in progress.
Regards,
John Kane
